Beetroot juice is one of the healthiest juices and has many benefits; most notably, lowering high blood pressure. According to a new study published by the Journal of Applied Physiology, beetroot juice has been found to make us more active.

Researchers at the University of Exeter discovered that people who drank beetroot juice were able to exercise up to 16% longer in high intensity exercises, and 12% more in a low intensity exercise such as walking. Exercisers used less oxygen due to the effects that beetroot juice has on your body. It’s found to dilate blood vessels which reduces blood pressure and allows more blood to flow. Secondly, it reduces the amount of oxygen needed by your muscle tissue during physical activity. Continue reading

Nourish Middle School Curriculum – Where Our Food Comes From

nourish_curriculumA few years ago when I started vegetable gardening again, as an adult, is when it first became apparent to me just how far removed our kids are from understanding what food really is and where it comes from. My teenage daughter asked me why in the world I was replacing some of my beautiful azaleas and other ornamental plantings from our front yard with vegetable seedlings. I explained to her that I was realizing that as a society, we should be eating more organic, local, whole foods and using our own resources to produce what we could on our own. She thought I’d gone completely insane! (I might have, but not about this.) She couldn’t believe that I was seriously going to eat the food I grew in the DIRT. She felt it was truly gross to do so and SHE wasn’t going to eat it!

Multivitamins Aren’t Good For You, After All??

I’ve always known how important it is to have a healthy diet, but like most of you, my busy schedule often times interferes with all of good intentions of eating healthy. No problem. I do my best to eat right and make up for any short-falls by taking my multivitamins, as suggested by my doctor and backed up by the American Medical Associations recommendation that all adults take a daily multivitamin. But hold on, many experts are now reversing their opinion on the importance of taking a multivitamin and now state that a multivitamin does NOT afford us any protection against bad habits and may even hurt us.
